HISTORY MARCH/APRIL
FIT FOR A PHARAOH
Pharaoh Hatshepsut’s heir tried to erase every trace of her long rule over Egypt. But many millennia later, her temple of a Million Years at Deir el Bahri still proclaims her glory in the splendor of its desert setting. Other features in this issue include:
• After the Temple – In the Bible, King Solomon builds a glorious temple to house Judaism’s most
sacred relics. Although the building itself no longer stands, the Temple of Jerusalem endures as a
cornerstone of the Jewish faith and practice.
• Glitter Troves of Thrace – Ancient Thracians inspired fear among their Greek neighbors, who
wove them into myths and legends, but recent finds of Thrace’s treasure hoards are shedding light
on the culture’s brilliance and complexity.
• Murdered for Her Mind – Hypatia of Alexandria was one of the fifth-century Egypt’s greatest intellects, btu her brilliance was extinguished because of political strife between the city’s Christian and paga powers.
• Secrets of Templo Mayor – In 1978 Mexico City workmen unearthed the center of the Aztec Empire: the pyramid of Templo Mayor, whose ruins have revealed the sacred rites of this powerful people.
