Pearl Harbor

Amid rising tensions with the U.S., Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941—later described as a "date which shall live in infamy." Much of the U.S. naval fleet was damaged or destroyed and ultimately around 2,400 Americans were killed.
