HISTORY SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER
ZAPATA MEXICO’S REVERED REVOLUTIONARY
Revolting against the oppressors of Mexico’s rural poor, Emiliano Zapata was felled by assassins’ bullets in 1919. But his legend lives on. Other features in this issue include:
• Egypt’s Pillars of Strength – Raised high by pharaohs to worship the sun god, obelisks were coveted by colonial powers and transported to Rome, London, Paris, and New York.
• Sparta Mania – Athenians admired their fierce Spartan neighbors, even while fighting them. Roman and Western thinkers also fell under the Spartans’ austere spell.
• Slaying Dragons – Ancient cultures saw dragons as magical. It was in medieval Europe that they were demonized, breathing fire into tales of quests, damsels, and knights.
• Conquistadoras and Explorers – Spanish women participated in the colonization of the Americas, leading expeditions, fighting, and founding cities such as Mexico’s Guadalajara.
• A Workplace Revolution – New inventions in the late 1800s brought open-plan layouts, functional furniture, and female workers into American offices.
