HISTORY MARCH/APRIL 2026
MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS
The reign of the Catholic Mary Queen of Scots played out in stark contrast to that of her Protestant cousin, Elizabeth I of England. Embroiled in suspicion and scandal, Mary was forced to abdicate. She fled Scotland for England, only to meet her doom. Other features in this issue include:
• The Origins of the Bible: According to tradition, the first five books of the Bible were dictated to Moses by God. Yet scholars have demonstrated that the text was composed in multiple stages by
various authors over the course of the 10th to fifth centuries B.C.
• Brutus: Tyrant Killer or Liberator?: The leader of the assassins of Julius Caesar, Marcus Junius Brutus, championed the values of the Roman Republic and was deeply concerned about the
dictatorship. In the power struggle following Caesar’s death, hope for a Republican revival faded in a new age of empire.
• The Beginnings of Radio: After WWI, when military restrictions on the use of new technology were lifted, commercial radio took the airwaves by storm. This glamorous new medium transformed access to entertainment, information, and education for millions of people around the world
