HISTORY MAY/ JUNE

PHILIP VS ALEXANDER

Philip II of Macedon raised a son who would become known as Alexander the Great. In a court rocked by plots, dynastic tension, and drunken fights, Alexander and his father were sometimes allies but often adversaries. Other features in this issue include:

• Thutmose, the Master of Megiddo – Showing great courage, young pharoah Thutmose III crushed his enemies in 1457 B.C. at Megiddo, in present-day Israel. With eastern trade under his command, Thutmose turned Egypt into a regional superpower.

• Celtic Treasures – Denigrated as primitive by the classical world, the Celts of northern and western Europe were master metalworkers who elite graves held the jewels, arms, and ritual objects of a complex, interconnected society.

• Twilight of the Samurai – The strict codes of Japan’s samurai warrior class were rooted in clan warfare, gaining them near-noble status. A long period of peace under the Tokugawa shogunate made the samurai obsolete—and the object of nostalgic yearning.

• Rotary Revolution – Even as fixed-wing flight took off, prototype helicopters struggled with control maneuvers in the air. Under the pressures of the Second World War, researchers cracked the design, and the modern chopper was born.
